UPDATE: 13-year-old boy drove pickup truck in fatal crash with transit van near Andrews

ANDREWS COUNTY, TX — A 13-year-old boy was driving the pickup truck that hit a transit van Tuesday night, killing nine people near Andrews, reports El Paso Times.

The fatal collision occurred on a two-lane stretch of FM 1788, about a half mile north of State Highway 115, on March 15, shortly after 8:15 p.m.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the boy was behind the wheel of a Dodge 2500 pickup truck heading southbound at high speed when the truck’s left-front tire, believed to be a spare, blew out. Moments later, the pickup veered into the northbound lanes and hit a transit van head-on.

The boy and an adult male passenger in the Dodge were both killed in the crash.

Authorities said the transit van was registered to the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico, and had been transporting the school’s golf team home from a tournament.

The team’s coach and six USW students were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two students who survived the crash were airlifted to Lubbock’s University Medical Center in critical condition. As of this writing, they were said to be stable and making steady recovery.
