9 killed, 2 critically hurt when pickup slams into USW golf team van

ANDREWS COUNTY, TX — Nine people died Tuesday night after a collision involving a passenger van and a pickup truck on FM 1788 near Andrews, reports KTSM.

The fatal wreck occurred about a half mile north of State Highway 115, shortly after 8:15 p.m.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a Dodge 2500 pickup truck was heading southbound on FM 1788 when it veered into northbound lane. It then collided head-on with an oncoming Ford Transit passenger van. Both vehicles became engulfed in flames.

Authorities said both the driver and a passenger in the Dodge died in the crash.

The Ford passenger van, which was registered to the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico, was carrying the school’s golf team.

Six students and one faculty member were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two students suffered critical injuries and were airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock.

The cause of the accident remains unclear at this time.

An investigation is being led by the West Texas Region District Crash Team of the Texas Highway Patrol.
